First, he visits the town of Melrose, where Donald Liang, whom Cormoran arrested for abusing his wife, lives. Cormoran investigates his two suspects who served in the military. Meanwhile, the police focus their investigation on Terence Malley, the man Cormoran sent to prison, which frustrates Cormoran. Jeff was acquitted at trial, and Cormoran wonders if he is just looking for an excuse to blame the killings on him. He strongly suspects his stepfather, Jeff Whittaker, who Cormoran thinks killed his mother. Cormoran realizes he is at a disadvantage because he doesn’t know what any of his suspects look like today. Later, Cormoran notices someone on the street following him. Cormoran is relieved that Robin’s current assignment has her working in an office where she should be safe. Cormoran tells Robin to stay off the case because he is worried about her safety, but Robin cannot resist doing research of her own. The two investigators begin researching the suspects. There is a fourth suspect, a man whom Cormoran testified against and sent to prison, but Cormoran thinks it is unlikely this is the killer because his testimony was given anonymously.
